How to protect your car from thieves
Vehicle thefts in SA jumped a staggering 24% in the past year, according to the National Motor Vehicle Theft Reduction Council (NMVTRC).
Shockingly, this was the largest increase in Australia over the same time period.
On average, a car is stolen every 11 minutes across the nation.
This is despite car manufacturers arming their latest vehicles with security systems that make it almost impossible to hot wire.
Half of all the cars stolen are taken from the home according to the NMVTRC, with 70% of vehicles stolen using their own keys.
“Offenders will often sneak into homes by taking advantage of unlocked doors and windows, even when owners are home,” RAA Insurance Claims Manager Hayley Cain says.
“Thieves will typically search for keys left in easily accessible places, such as a key hook or a bowl near the front door.”
